SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

Governor's Schools

The Tennessee Governor's Schools provide eleven challenging and high-intensity programs for rising 11th and 12th grade students nominated by high school faculty. Students interested in participating in a Governor's Schools program should obtain the application(s) from a high school counselor. 

Stanford University Pre-Collegiate Studies

Stanford Sports Business Academy

Gives high school students an overview of careers in the sports and entertainment industries, with a focus on management, law, negotiation, and leadership. Students will experience what it's like to work in the business of sports and entertainment and will meet leaders and athletes in professional sports. 

 

Summer Humanities Institute

Rising high school juniors and seniors explore the big questions at the heart of the humanities in seminars led by distinguished Stanford professors. Students spend the first two weeks intensively studying and researching a topic in history, philosophy, or literature, attending daily lectures by the faculty members, and participating in group discussions. During their third week, students work closely with their professors, graduate students, and writing mentors to produce original research projects. 

 

Summer Arts Institute

High school students from around the world come together for a three-week intensive program offering academically engaging interdisciplinary courses in design, music, and architecture. The Summer Arts Institute's four courses emphasize the essential connections between the arts and other areas of study. 

 

Artificial Intelligence Laboratory's Outreach Summer Program

AI will change the world. Who will change AI? This program intends to increase diversity in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Current 9th grade girls are encouraged to apply. Students will learn about Artificial Intelligence through a combination of lectures, hands-on research projects, field trips, and mentoring activities during this three-week residential program. 

 

Summer Institutes

High school students engage in intensive, single-subject courses with instructors and peers who share their talents, passions, and interests. Coursework is tightly integrated with the social experience in academically themed residences. Courses in areas ranging from business to biotechnology and cryptography to creative writing are customized to give students deep exposure and hands-on experience. There are over 50 courses from which to chose. 

 

Stanford University Mathematics Camp (SUMaC)

At SUMaC, an elite group of talented rising high school juniors and seniors from around the world come to Stanford for intensive study in advanced mathematics through lectures, guided research, and group problem-solving. In a social environment centered on mathematics, students explore current lines of mathematical research and applications across scientific disciplines. 

 

University-Level Online Math and Physics Courses

For students who have surpassed their high school's math and physics curriculum, University-Level Online Math & Physics courses are offered throughout the year and are largely self-paced, giving students the opportunity to take a broad array of math and physics courses. Expert instructors are available for optional office hours to meet with students online and offer assistance as they progress through the course material. All courses carry Stanford University Continuing Studies credit. 

 

Stanford Summer Session

Stanford also provides the opportunity for qualified high school students to enroll as a visiting undergraduate, through Stanford Summer Session. Students ages 16-19 choose from more than 145 college courses in 30 academic departments, earning Stanford undergraduate course credit and an official Stanford University transcript. Students create their own course schedules.

Agricultural & Veterinary Opportunities

VetCAMP 

​

This program is offered to rising high school juniors, seniors, and rising college freshmen to evaluate their skills and competitiveness as future veterinarians, provide mentorship and help them experience veterinary medicine as an exciting career path. The cost of attending the program is $900, which cover lodging meals, instruction, and social activities. Financial assistance is available to students with demonstrated need.

Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) for Sophomores

Since 1958, HOBY has provided transformative leadership development training to positively impact the lives of thousands of high school students in the US and abroad annually. All seminars take place between April and June and students must register in early December.

Duke IiP & Summer Studies

Summer Studies is a three-week residential program for high-achieving young scholars in grades seven through ten. Taking place at thirteen college campuses across the country over two different summer sessions, the programs provide the social and intellectual stimulus that gifted students need.

 

Waupaca Foundry, Inc. Temporary Summer Help 

If you are interested in summer employment with Waupaca Foundry, Inc. in Etowah, please submit your application online at jobs.waupacafoundry.com.

Summer students work in production and make $11.21 per hour. Positions will be filled on both day and night shifts. 

​

Anyone who will be considered for summer employment must meet the following requirements:

​

1. Be enrolled in post high school education for the Fall 2018 semester. 

2. Be considered a full time student (12 credits or more)

3. Be 18 years or older

Youth Forum on Medicine

This program is for rising high school seniors who have an interest in careers in medicine. If you are interested, please speak to Mrs. Estes or your counselor.
